Meditation, Adding or Subtraction?
If it's bitter at the start, then it's sweeter in the end - Madonna
Starting a meditation habit is something most people would consider adding something to their life. Another thing to have to remember to do and add to their ever growing list of daily tasks.
We are told repeatedly and by many that meditation can change your life, reduce stress and lower heart rates.
So why is it seen as such a task? Considering we spend an average of 4 hours and 37 mins a day on our smartphones what is 5 or 10 minutes meditating going to eat up?
A teacher once invited me to shift my thinking on this. Instead of thinking of adding a meditation practice why not see it the other way, that you are taking something away.
When you just sit and meditate, simply being mindful and focusing on the breath you are taking things away. Reducing the senses to a minimum, lowering the heart rate and slowing the thoughts.
The benefits to this practice are huge, and the good news is it's a habit that compounds (more consistent practice yields exponential results).
Just 5 minutes a day is all it takes to start to see the positive outcomes of meditation.
Give it a try.
